Forest of Bowland

Details

Drives

Bowland is essentially upland country forming part of the Pennines, its essential landscape character is one of grandeur and isolation. The area is dominated by  gritstone fells with summits above 450m and vast tracts of heather-covered peat moorland.

The fells’ fringe of foothills is dissected by steep-sided valleys which open out into the rich green lowlands of the Ribble, Hodder, Wyre and Lune Valleys. Well-wooded and dotted with picturesque stone farms and villages, these lower slopes, criss-crossed by drystone walls, contrast with and complement the dramatic open sweep of the gritstone heights. On its south-eastern edge, famous Pendle Hill forms the outlier of the Forest of Bowland AONB.

TAM - who we are and what do we stand for...*
With a lot of new followers we thought we'd reintroduce ourselves.

We are 'TAM - trawden artists & makers', a small and determined group which promotes artists and art. We are based in the village of Trawden (hence the name) which hosts an annual two day art exhibition, open studios and art trail weekend.

We share information of upcoming events with artists who are actively involved with TAM, organise events, occasional outings and share ideas and friendship over cups of tea in the Old rock cafe or Trawden Community Centre, Library & Shop.

We have grown exponentially year on year and despite being limited by the number of venues we have available we host artists and makers. This year we have willow weaving, photographers, sculptures, stone mason, silk painters, speciality yarn makers as well as visual artists, fine art, bespoke framers, pop art, mixed media artists, steampunk and so so so much more!

This year, NEW for 19 - we have artisan foods, Rising Stars (the next generation artists), as well as a Textile Exhibition from Nelson and Colne College and a welcome return for our 'Art in Action' artists.

Our driving force is to find and support AMAZING and TALENTED artists and makers and to help provide a platform for them to be able to sell or exhibit their wonderful creativity.

Here is to another successful TAM

For Children

Ball grove Park is a great place to take your children.  There is a children's play area, and lovely nature walks along the valley.  Watch for the ducks on the lakes and when its time for a cuppa there is a great cafe with home made cake!

Ball Grove is situated off Trawden Road and behind LBS Garden Centre. Turn at the Lee Garden Chinese takeaway, half way along the road between Colne and Trawden.  Alternatively, take the turning to the carpark at the Cafe / Lake from the Keithley Road. (BB8 7HY)

Ball Grove Park

What is now Ball Grove Park and Local Nature Reserve was once the site of the largest light tanneries in Europe.
Built in 1860 by W and J Sagar the main buildings of the tannery were in the area which is now Ball Grove Park.  Over 100,000 gallons of water were taken from Colne water from two weirs to power a water wheel and provide water for the tanning proces.
The business was declared bankrupt in 1970 and the tannery was demolished in 1974.
Ball Grove Park was awarded a prestigious Green Flag in 2014.
Seven hectares of community woodland and the Fearndene Way, which runs through the park offer attractive walks from Ball Grove right up through the nature walk and continue through to Wycoller Country Park.
